Rushcliffe Pre-School

Bringing Curiosity, Awe and Wonder into Early Childhood.

Curriculum

Learning Through Play

Our curriculum follows the government Early Years Foundation Stage programme but is influenced by many childhood theorists to create a curriculum that is rich in natural and authentic materials that supports children’s natural curiosity, awe and wonder for the world around them.

We also offer additional activities and resources that enhance the offer we provide and add to your child’s learning and development here are just a few.

Art

We look at different artists and their use of colours and textures to create art work and children get to use colours in new and exciting ways. We provide a wide range of materials for children to choose from to encourage their creativity and imagination.

Music & Movement

Children will experience different types of music and from different parts of the world to support their understanding of their world. They will investigate sounds and how they are made and how they can be changed. Music supports children’s language development through songs. Children enjoy moving to music and find it a good way of expressing how they feel. We also use music as part of our wellbeing and Yoga sessions to help children relax and take time to reset.

Forest School

The children learn about the importance nature and how things grow and change over time. They learn about the life cycles of insects and animals and their importance in the world. They will take part in growing carrots, potatoes and other vegetables. We will use this to teach them about the importance of a healthy diet. They will gain experience of using different tools and how to manage them safely. They will have experience of recycling and its importance to their world and what they can do to help.

Reading Scheme

Your child will have the opportunity to choose story books from our library to take home. This helps children with their literacy skills and early reading. When children are ready they are moved onto our early reading books to develop recognition of words and developing their phonics. This will develop their reading and writing skills.

Phonics

Children are supported with recognising letters by understanding their names and the sounds they make all of which supports early reading and writing skills. Children are in a rich environment of resources that support this learning.

Mathematics

We provide children with lots of opportunities to develop their maths skills from understanding numbers and their values, to 2D and 3D shapes and weights and measures. They will play games such as magic numbers which supports their understanding of addition and subtraction and have knowledge of volume and capacity through water and sand play.

Educational Trips

The children will go on small trips to places like the park or the Library and once a year we have a trip to places such as the zoo or a farm for example. These all help to develop further children’s understanding their world.
